Alexander Dennis Enviro400 double deck, low emission bus

Cummins customer and bus manufacturer Alexander Dennis has received an order for 200 of its Enviro400 double deck, low emission buses from operator Stagecoach in one of the UK’s largest orders by number of vehicles since 2019.

With the new Cummins-powered buses, Stagecoach plans to remove older buses from its fleet, modernising operations and improving air quality in its communities. The highly efficient B6.7 Euro VI engine rated at 187 kW (250 hp) will facilitate quieter journeys for bus users, while local communities will benefit from cleaner public transport with much reduced emissions.

Sam Greer, Regional Director for Stagecoach, said: “We are proud of the continued investment we are making to our fleet. This really shows our commitment to the future prosperity of our communities and to our people who can all benefit from cleaner transport and a growing bus sector.

“These new double decker buses will complement the investment we are already making with our electric buses to modernise our fleet in some of Britain’s major towns and cities, enabling reduced pollution and meaning customers will see more comfortable, quieter, and newer vehicles on their everyday journeys.

“We look forward to working in partnership to get our new buses into service starting in the coming months.”

Paul Davies, Alexander Dennis President & Managing Director, said: “Our low-emission Enviro400 is a tried and tested product that combines efficiency with high passenger capacity. Robust and easy to maintain, the 200 new buses will integrate seamlessly into Stagecoach’s fleet.

“After the challenges both operators and manufacturers in the UK bus industry have faced in the last years, it is a heartening step on the road to recovery to see significant volumes of vehicles being ordered again by the country’s largest bus operator, Stagecoach.”

Wayne Hare, Territory Manager – Northern Europe, explains: “Cummins has worked in partnership with Alexander Dennis for more than 30 years, and we are excited to be part of the UK’s largest bus order in recent times. With the B6.7 Euro VI engine, Stagecoach can meet their low-emissions goals as well as benefit from the high performance, dependability and efficient operation modern bus operators require.”

The buses will be built at Alexander Dennis’ sites in the United Kingdom, with the engines supplied from Cummins’ Darlington Engine Plant. Bus delivery is planned for 2023 to depots throughout England, from Torquay in the South West to Newcastle in the North East (only a short hop from Darlington Engine Plant!).
