Emissions Testing
Partnering with our customers to test our products helps Cummins build innovative and dependable solutions.
The value of our emissions testing programs
Part of delivering on our brand promise of innovation and dependability to our customers is ensuring our products perform as expected throughout their intended life span. To do this, we identify and invite eligible customers to participate in various testing programs designed to study our products and their compliance with regulatory testing requirements. Our testing needs have a vast range: we test components such as turbo chargers, EGR valves, and aftertreatment systems, and this testing may require that a customer allows us to borrow an entire vehicle for a period of time.
In-use testing
Outlined below are some of the key aspects of testing and how we identify customers to participate. You can also skip to the FAQs.
ISC is the testing of on-highway vehicle emissions performance to allow a collection of real time data which is then reviewed and analysed to produce an overall emissions value for a set cycle in real life operation.
This gaseous emissions data is measured using Portable Emissions Management System (PEMS) equipment, to ensure the product is legally compliant within the region’s emissions certification level.
Cummins carry out testing over a 2-3 week period on vehicles that have a minimum mileage of 25,000 km.
ISM is the testing of engines installed in non-road machinery for their emissions performance in a real-world setting. This is also done with PEMS equipment fitted to the machine and analysing the exhaust gases emitted during its normal operation at the operating site.
Equipment installation, testing, and equipment removal vary depending on the application and test type, taking approximately 48-72 hours.
Independent emissions studies
Cummins’ mission of powering a more prosperous world means we care about reducing our environmental impact. We maintain a deep understanding of our products through all stages of their lives. This ensures regulatory compliance in over 200 countries and keeps our brand promise of dependability to our customers. Our independent emissions studies test a broad range of the products that include, but are not limited to, products used in On-highway, Off-highway, Marine and Power Generation applications. The test article selection process varies based on the market segment, vehicle use and production volumes.
If your Cummins product is selected for one of our studies, we will work with the account team in your area to contact you directly.
Frequently asked questions
How long will Cummins be carrying out Emissions Compliance testing?
These emissions compliance programmes are on-going, and it’s is unlikely this will stop, with increased focus on in-use testing meaning the size of the programmes are only likely to increase in the coming years.
Why have you selected us to take part in your programmes?
You have a Cummins product installed within one of your vehicles which meets the criteria of our testing programme. We aim to test with different applications and customers on a yearly basis to get an all-round view. However, in some limited cases you may be the only one operating a particular engine platform.
Will we see any cost for participating in the programmes?
No, Cummins expects to cover all costs related to carrying out any given emissions compliance programme. There should be no cost to an OEM, service facility or end user (within reason).
Who carries out this work? Cummins or someone else?
This is dependent on several factors that include vehicle application, vehicle location, availability of workshop or approved technicians to carry out the work and test providers who we carefully select to work with. We often work with the OEM or operator to understand if they have any preferences to this and take the feedback on board during our planning.
Will I be able to see the emissions results for my vehicle?
No, your vehicle’s emissions data can only be seen by Cummins, the Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA) and the Swedish Transport Authority (STA).
We are driven by serving our stakeholders in the pursuit of smarter, cleaner power, providing solutions today that lower emissions and bridge the transition to a sustainable future, while innovating the technologies of tomorrow that will take us to zero.
