Creating solutions that matter: Iniubong's journey at Cummins Inc.

For Iniubong, a career at Cummins Inc. wasn't something he planned. It was the unexpected result of an interest in engineering that began years earlier while growing up in Nigeria.

Long before he became a Controls Electronic Hardware Technical Specialist, one familiar logo caught his attention.

"Growing up, I was familiar with different generator brands. I remember seeing Cummins logos on green generators and wondering what set them apart from the others," Iniubong said.

Today, he helps develop and validate diagnostic systems that support the performance, safety and reliability of Cummins products around the world. It's a role that combines technical problem-solving with real-world impact, and one that traces back to a question he first asked as a child.

A curiosity that became a career

Iniubong's interest in engineering was shaped by his father, an electrical engineer who often spent his spare time maintaining the family's diesel generator and working on electrical projects around their home.

"Around the age of seven, he began asking for my help with simple tasks like holding a flashlight or handing him tools. At the time, those tasks seemed minor, but those moments left a lasting impression," Iniubong said.

As the years passed, his curiosity grew into a passion for understanding how generators worked.

That interest led him to Ghana, where he earned a bachelor's degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering and gained hands-on experience with power generation and control systems.

After graduation, he supported live broadcasts for large-scale events as an engineer, strengthening his technical skills and ability to solve problems under pressure. Wanting to deepen his expertise, he moved to the United States to pursue a master's degree in Electrical Engineering.

While in graduate school, a series of conversations unexpectedly reshaped his view of Cummins.

"I reconnected with three friends from different schools I had attended over the years, and they all happened to be working at Cummins," he said.

Until then, he had primarily associated the company with the generators he remembered from childhood. Through those conversations, he discovered a global technology leader with opportunities spanning multiple businesses and power solutions.

"I began to see the company not just as a generator manufacturer, but as a global organization with a broad portfolio of power solutions and opportunities across multiple business units," he said.

Inspired by the opportunity to work on technologies with real-world impact, Iniubong applied for an internship. Before graduating, that internship turned into a full-time role.

Solving problems that matter

Seven years later, Iniubong helps develop and validate diagnostic systems for next-generation Cummins products, identifying potential issues and supporting solutions that operate safely, reliably and efficiently for customers around the world. Working alongside cross-functional teams, he contributes to solutions that improve product performance, regulatory compliance and customer confidence.

For Iniubong, the most rewarding part of the role is solving problems whose answers aren't immediately obvious.

"While there are common responsibilities that shape my day, no two challenges are exactly alike," he said. "When a customer reports an issue, the root cause isn't always obvious. Working through the uncertainty, asking the right questions and ultimately uncovering the underlying cause is incredibly rewarding."

That same curiosity continues to drive him today.

Finding community at Cummins

While engineering is at the center of his career, the people are what have made Cummins especially meaningful to him.

"I would describe the work environment at Cummins as inclusive and welcoming," he said. "People are genuinely down to earth, which makes it easy to build relationships and collaborate across all levels of the organization."

Beyond his technical role, Iniubong serves as the Cummins Black Network (CBN) Signature Events Co-Lead, helping plan impactful events that bring employees together, foster meaningful dialogue and strengthen community across the company.

"I enjoy bringing people together. Planning events has shown me that some of the most rewarding growth comes from shared experiences, meaningful dialogue and genuine connections," he said.

He has also participated in mentorship circles through employee resource groups, experiences that have expanded his understanding of the business while helping shape his own career.

"Overall, these experiences have been instrumental in my growth, combining hands-on technical challenges with mentorship, exposure to leadership and a broader understanding of how different Cummins businesses work together to meet customers' unique power solution needs across global markets," he said.

Looking ahead

As he looks to the future, Iniubong hopes to continue building on his technical expertise while expanding into roles that connect engineering, customers and business strategy.

"While my background is rooted in engineering, mentorship has broadened my perspective and helped me better understand how technical decisions connect to customer needs, business priorities and organizational strategy," he said.
