PrevenTech® drives real impact in the Elko gold mining region

Challenge:

Mining operations in the Elko region rely on large-scale, heavy-duty engines to power their gold extraction and processing activities. Like in any hard rock mining environment, these engines are subject to operational stress, requiring careful engine monitoring and maintenance so that critical component failures don’t lead to cascading damage, unplanned downtime and substantial repair costs. Additionally, because gold is so valuable, it's essential to maintain high uptime and consistent production.

Solution:

To better monitor and protect engines across the Elko Gold Mining Region, an innovative approach was required to address maintenance and uptime management.

PrevenTech, Cummins’ advanced remote engine monitoring and predictive analytics platform, was deployed across Cummins-supported sites in the Elko region. For one customer with nearly 50 engines connected, the platform’s advanced monitoring capabilities enabled real-time detection of an emerging exhaust valve anomaly on one particular unit.

When PrevenTech identified an early-stage valve failure on a QSK60 engine, the Cummins team promptly advised the customer to shut down the engine. This proactive intervention prevented further damage and allowed for targeted, efficient repairs.

The early detection and rapid response facilitated by PrevenTech averted catastrophic engine damage, reducing a potential repair bill from $180,000 to just $10,000, and condensing repair time from multiple days to about eight hours.

In addition to direct cost savings, the customer avoided additional hours of lost production time. Given gold’s current market value — approximately $4,800–$5,000 per ounce — this equates to $800,000–$1 million per hour of site-wide production value protected by avoiding unnecessary downtime.
