What Is the Meritor Tire Inflation System™ (MTIS™)?
The Meritor Tire Inflation System™ (MTIS™) with Standard ThermALERT™ is an automatic tire inflation system designed to help maintain proper trailer tire pressure while vehicles are operating. By preventing underinflated tires, MTIS™ supports tire health, promotes operational efficiency and helps fleets stay on the road longer. It is a viable solution for trailers of virtually any size or application.
Trailers play a crucial role in transporting various goods and necessities, making it essential for them to remain on the road and operating efficiently. Because fleets often spend extended periods on the road, technologies that support performance, reliability and safety are increasingly important.
Fleet managers and drivers face numerous challenges throughout their operations, but one of the most critical is maintaining proper tire pressure. Road conditions, weather changes and everyday wear can all affect tire performance. Low tire pressure not only jeopardizes vehicle safety but can also impact trailer performance, fuel efficiency and overall operational effectiveness.
To help address these challenges, Cummins Inc.'s Drivetrain and Braking Systems offers the Meritor Tire Inflation System™ (MTIS™) with Standard ThermALERT™ as a long-term solution for supporting tire health and reducing tire-related downtime. MTIS™ helps fleets proactively manage tire pressure and maintain productivity on the road.
How MTIS can fill the gaps in your problem
The MTIS uses pressurized air to keep tires inflated and reduce costly, undesirable downtime. The way this pressurized air is used in the system is simple. Pressurized air from the trailer air tank supply moves to a filter that removes any impurities, that pressurized air is then sent to the control box. This regulated air goes to the axle tube into the rotary union (called “Thru Tee”), where it is distributed as needed into the tires through tire hoses.
This automated system gives the peace of mind that the tire is at its proper inflation level. While this innovative system does not replace the need for routine maintenance, it will extend the tire usage and keep fleets on the road, safer, for longer.
More than just a tire inflation system
MTIS is the first system in the automatic tire inflation system industry and it is leading the way for the dependability of tires, meeting and exceeding the expected operations of any fleet. As an overall leader in sales, the MTIS design provides several benefits beyond the monitoring of tire air. Studies show a 10% increase in tire life1 and a 1.4% average improvement in fuel economy1. It also provides cost-saving benefits, fewer blowouts and much more.
- Cost and efficiency benefits: MTIS monitors the air in your tires to provide accurate pressure levels. Awareness of tire pressure can allow drivers to avoid possible side effects of a blowout, such as downtime, citations, or fines for the company. The MTIS design uses cost-effective components like leak detection, making diagnosing and repairing leaks easy. These elements provide streamlined and cost-efficient savings for the MTIS product. Depending on the usage of tires, fleets typically see a return on investment within one to two years.
- Maintenance and roadside benefits: For high-operating fleets, underinflated tires can negatively impact their tires and lead to many problems down the road. Underinflated tires lower tread life, decrease fuel economy and increase possible blowouts. MTIS has airflow monitoring capabilities that provide real-time monitoring capabilities, like the real-time tire issue warning presented to drivers on the road. Tire life is important to keep a fleet going. With less need to change out tires, a fleet’s operation can extend to its highest potential.
- Instillation benefits: MTIS is an agnostic system. This means it is easy to install into any trailer type or size. Virtually all major trailer axle models can be installed with MTIS making it almost entirely universal to fleets with a lower installation cost. Additionally, its over-the-road pressure maintenance system allows for constant monitoring of tire pressures.
- Standard ThermALERT™ system: With its Standard ThermALERT system, fleets can expect even greater care for their tire system. This powerful system alerts drivers when wheel-ends are overheating and is proven to assist drivers so they can preventatively act, avoiding damage or dangerous results. Because this system increases road safety for the public and the driver, it also reduces downtime for fleets.
See how the Meritor Tire Inflation System™ (MTIS™) with Standard ThermALERT™ can help support tire health, improve fleet efficiency and reduce downtime. With automatic tire pressure maintenance and wheel-end overheating alerts, MTIS™ helps fleets stay on the road longer and operate more safely.
Cummins is a global leader in commercial transportation solutions and is dedicated to improving fleet performance through innovative drivetrain and braking technologies. Frequently asked questions
The Meritor Tire Inflation System™ (MTIS™) with Standard ThermALERT™ is an automatic trailer tire inflation system designed to help maintain proper trailer tire pressure while vehicles are operating.
The Meritor Tire Inflation System™ (MTIS™) uses pressurized air from the trailer air tank through a Pressure Protection Valve (PPV). Air is filtered and regulated at the Control Box to the desired cold-pressure setting, then routed through the hollow axle, rotary union and tire hoses into the tires to help maintain proper tire pressure. Standard ThermALERT™ warns drivers of overheating wheel-ends.
MTIS™ helps maintain proper trailer tire pressure while vehicles are operating. By helping maintain proper tire pressure, MTIS™ supports tire health, fuel efficiency, fleet productivity and reduced tire-related downtime.
Yes. MTIS™ is designed to work with virtually all major trailer axle models, making it suitable for a wide range of fleet applications.
Standard ThermALERT™ alerts drivers when wheel ends are overheating, helping prevent component damage, reduce downtime, and improve road safety.
